“For we are the temple of the living God, as God said…” – 2 Corinthians 6:16
Years ago, retired missionary Ralph Rummage would interject himself into my Sunday night teaching time in a grandfatherly way. He was gentle but firm. I felt rebuked, but at first, I didn’t understand why.
In the course of my teaching, I would say, “the apostle Paul wrote…” or “Peter said…” referring to a passage in one of the New Testament letters. Ralph would raise his hand, and he would say, “And God said” in a deep booming voice. I didn’t understand for a while what he was doing, but now I do! Ralph was underlining an absolutely foundational truth. When Scripture speaks, God speaks! While Paul wrote this letter and Moses wrote Leviticus, God is the ultimate author of Scripture.

It seems like a small matter, but it is a huge deal in a cultural context that routinely dismisses whole sections of Scripture because it doesn’t fit their worldview. The opposite is supposed to happen. When our worldview does not fit Scripture, our worldview is supposed to change, not Scripture. So the next time you open your Bible…or Bible app…remember that voice from a generation now gone, “and God said!”
