The Apprentice

“A disciple is not above his teacher, but everyone who is fully trained will be like his teacher.” – Luke 6:40

Don’t be thrown off by the word, “disciple.” Jesus isn’t talking here about super spiritual people. He is talking about ordinary, everyday students. But don’t be thrown off by the word “student” either. Jesus isn’t talking about students in a classroom taking notes while a lecturer presents information. He is talking about apprentices who work and eat, laugh and cry with their master. Apprentices don’t just learn information from their teacher. They learn a way of life.

So what is Jesus saying? Be careful whose apprentice you become…because you will become like them. Whose voice do you listen to first when faced with a big decision? Whose arms do you run to when you are hurt? Whose favor thrills your soul? Whoever this may be is forming your soul.

Is it Jesus?
