Wait Like An Eagle

“…those who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up on wings like eagles…” – Isaiah 40:31 (ESV)

Are you an eagle or a hummingbird? An eagle can fly for hours because it finds an updraft and floats upon it. A hummingbird is hours from starvation because it utilizes an enormous amount of energy to stay aloft. Consider the question again, are you an eagle or a hummingbird?

What does being an eagle look like? According to the wisdom of the Bible, the “eagle” waits on the Lord. This kind of waiting implies active trust, reliance. Just as the eagle relies on the updraft, so also the “eagle” relies on the Lord’s renewal before attempting to soar.

“Wait on the Lord” also implies attentiveness. Just as the second-string quarterback stays tuned into the game so that he can be ready to jump in at a moment’s notice, so also the “eagle” is prepared to respond to the faintest leadings of God’s Spirit.

“Trust in the Lord” also implies anticipation. Just as the patient waits for her name to be called with a mixture of hope and fear, so also the “eagle” waits with anticipation for the healing and challenge that comes when her name is called.

Are you a weary hummingbird wanting to become a renewed eagle? Wait on the Lord. As the words of the prophet Isaiah remind us, the answer to weariness is waiting.
