“For this reason, we must pay attention all the more to what we have heard, so that we will not drift away.” Hebrews 2:1

“Where you look is where you will tend to go.” These words rung in my ears as I drove away from the house for my first solo drive behind the wheel. Driving down the road or making a turn was not a problem for me. Changing lanes, however, now that was a different story! I would put on my blinker, look over my shoulder to make sure there was no traffic, then look forward only to realize I had already changed lanes! There was something about changing lanes that required me to pay even closer attention to where I was going.
“Where you look is where you will tend to go” is not just a truth for driving. It applies to following Jesus in the real world. When things are stable and predictable, it can be relatively easy to “pay attention…to all that we have heard.” When our family, church, school, workplace, city, nation, or culture is “changing lanes,” it is easy to look at all sorts of places besides where we need to go. We may even end up “changing lanes” inadvertently simply because we have focused for far too long on important yet secondary matters. We need to hear again the words from Hebrews 2:1, “For this reason, we must pay attention all the more to what we have heard, so that we will not drift away.”
“Where you look is where you will tend to go.” Where are you looking?
