“Abraham fell facedown. Then he laughed and said to himself, ‘Can a child be born to a hundred-year-old man? Can Sarah, a ninety-year-old woman, give birth?’” – Genesis 17:17
Abraham believed what God said…but laughed at how God said He would keep His promise…through his aging wife. Laughing at God reveals not that we don’t believe in Him but that we believe in a lesser version than Him. Laughing at God doesn’t reveal the absence of belief. It exposes belief in a God who is limited in power.
The truth is that God will lead us into situations that require us to expand our view of Him. Can I choose where to go to school, what to major in, or what job to take with confidence that He will direct my steps? Can God bring my child to salvation? Can I begin a new dream after an old one dies? Can I live with joy in face of disease and death?
In order for us to successfully walk through these moments, we must allow our view of God to be shaped by His revelation not our inclination. In all these moments of life, God is challenging a lesser vision of Him and calling us to expand our vision and see Him as the All-Powerful One.
