Then Sarai said to Abram, “You are responsible for my suffering! I put my slave in your arms, and when she saw that she was pregnant, I became contemptible to her. May the Lord judge between me and you.” – Genesis 16:5
I take faith into my own hands…when I rely on the wrong savior, like Sarai did. Sarai looked to her servant to save her from the emptiness of childlessness (Genesis 16:2). Her functional savior became a very real devil whom she despised.
When you make a boyfriend or girlfriend, professor or teacher, husband or wife, child or parent, politician or pastor, your functional savior and expect them to rescue you from loneliness, aimlessness, purposelessness, godlessness, or fearfulness, you are turning to a functional savior. A functional savior will always fail us because only one Savior can carry the weight of our hopes and expectations – Jesus Christ. When your functional savior fails you, you will find that instead of loving them, you hate them. Instead of longing for them, you despise them.
To what savior are you taking your hopes and expectations?
