Father Abraham Series: Fundamentals

“He took him outside and said, ‘Look at the sky and count the stars, if you are able to count them.’ Then He said to him, ‘Your offspring will be that numerous.’ Abram believed the Lord…” – Genesis 15:5-6

The greatest challenge of coaching 7th grade basketball was convincing junior high boys that if they wanted to make the exciting play like hitting a 3 pointer or getting a steal, then they would have to learn the fundamentals first. They need to catch the ball before they can shoot it and be in a proper defensive position before they can steal it. Following the fundamentals in the easy steps is the prerequisite to the more difficult and more exciting ones.

The same principle is true in walking with the Lord. The fundamental is simple. God reveals His will, and we respond by believing and acting on His Word. If we want to see faith that lifts a tree and “throws into the sea” (Matthew 21:21), then we must first believe and act on the simple things God has already revealed…simple things like “a gentle answer turns away wrath” (Proverbs 15:1), “love your neighbor as yourself” (Mark 12:31), and “forgive others their offenses” (Matthew 6:14). God reveals enough for us to move forward in faith. Whether or not we believe and act on what He has already revealed will shape how much more of Himself He reveals.
