Father Abraham Series: First Words

But Abram said, ‘Lord God, what can You give me, since I am childless and the heir of my house is Eliezer of Damascus?’” – Genesis 15:2

First words say a lot about a child, and what experiences are dominating their life at the time. My childrens’ first words varied from “Dada” to “Momma” to “ball!” What is true of a child’s first words is true of our words with God.

Abram’s first recorded words to God reveal the doubt that dominated his life. “How will you do it?” “Why haven’t you done something already?” If we stop and think about what our own prayer, we may be surprised to see what it reveals about what is dominating our life. “Why did You let that happen?” “Where are You?” “When will You show up?” “Are you going to help?”

These are often the first words we bring to God, but fortunately, God is very willing to hear our doubts and questions. What is more, He doesn’t leave us there. He will teach us how to walk in faith, and He even rewards “faith-walking” in a life-changing way. Then we find our first words to be “thank you, God!”
