Father Abraham Series: What’s Written On Your Heart?

“When you go out to war against your enemies and see horses, chariots, and an army larger than yours, do not be afraid of them, for the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, is with you…Do not be cowardly. Do not be afraid, alarmed, or terrified because of them. For the LORD your God is the one who goes with you to fight for you against your enemies to give you victory.” – Deuteronomy 20:1, 4

Abram embodied Deuteronomy 20:1-4 before it was even written. His world descended into war (Genesis 14:1-11). His nephew, Lot, and his whole family were inadvertently caught up in the battle as spoils of war (Genesis 14:12). Abram responds by attacking the army with 318 men, and he wins (Genesis 14:13-16)!

Abram shows that he has God’s Law “written on his heart” (Jeremiah 31:33), so he is the paradigm for faithful living (see Romans 4 and Galatians 3). What do we learn from his example?

Faith has the right object (God Most High), so fear has no power. We can face the powers of this world – cultural hostility, economic uncertainty, health fragility – with confidence and tenacity because the Power who created this world is with us.

What is written on your heart? Faith or fear? When enemies appear on the horizon, train your eyes to look above the horizon to the Lord your God who fights for you.
