“The Lord said to Abram: Go from your land, your relatives, and your father’s house…” – Genesis 12:1
God is not a career placement counselor. He does not carefully consider my desires and make up and place me in a job that neatly fits my hopes. He’s not looking to take square pegs and put them in square holes. He’s looking to take a square peg…then refashion it into a fishing pole or a chair leg or some other useful item in His plan.
We can often operate under the delusion that tells us that “God loves me” means that God wants me just as I am. It’s not true. He accepts and forgives me just as I am, but He by no means wants me to stay as I am. He wants me as He sees what I can be. If I stubbornly hold on to being a square peg, then I will never know my role in His plan. That is why Jesus would say, “If you love your life, you will lose it. If you hate your life, you gain it eternally” (John 12:25).
We rightly reject the popular notions of the prosperity gospel because it turns God into our personal genie. Yet if we think that we can somehow walk with God and not have our lives, values, behavior, relationships and beliefs continually challenged and altered, then we have adopted our own version of the prosperity gospel.
It is true! You can’t stay the way you are and go with God. Either He will have to change, or you will. He’s already stated that He is the same yesterday, today and forever (Heb 13:8), so don’t count on Him making a change!
